About Me

Hi, my name is Rich Santomauro.  I am a retired United States Navy Submarine Veteran with 30 years of service (1972-2002).

Hometown: Lyndhurst, NJ
College: University of Phoenix
High School:  Lyndhurst and Jackson High

Occupation: Information Technology
Space & Naval Warfare Systems Command

Politics: I guess you could call me an Independent Conservative.  However, I support many liberal points of view such as a woman's right to choose, and equal rights for gays and lesbians.  I am also a supporter of stem cell research, which I believe will improve the human condition in the future.

GOOOH!  -- I am the CA District 52 GOOOH! Leader and support Tim Cox's initiative, which is to return the House of Representatives to the people.  I urge you to take some time to Google "Tim Cox" and "GOOOH!" and to visit the web site at http://goooh.com.

Our country faces many challenges in the coming years.

1. On Foreign Affairs and National Defense:
I am worried that our children will have to face a world filled with Islamic Radicalism, a growing threat from Communist China, Venezuela, North Korea, and a growing threat from the Islamic regimes of the middle east.

Our military should never be used as a tool to spread freedom.  Our military might, when needed should use all of its strength to crush the enemy as quickly as possible.  The war in the Pacific vs Japan was brought to a swift end because President Harry Truman (a Democrat by the way) had the resolve to use nuclear weapons.   In hindsight we look upon that decision in horror, and rightfully so.  Regardless of how you feel about Iraq, Afghanistan or even the Vietnam conflicts, it is evident that they dragged out for years and resulted in as many more casualties.  War is mankind at its worst, and when necessary should be prosecuted as swiftly as possible to bring it to an end.

In the future, we must never support dictators!  However, we must provide support to groups such as the Green Movement in Iran as well as to moderates in Egypt.

2. On the Budget, Entitlements and the Federal Government:
Our federal government is out of control.  It has expanded the scope of it's responsibility too deeply into our economy and our lives.  We are a republic, not a democracy!

Our federal government spends too much, borrows too much, and taxes too much.

We cannot pay off the debt over night.  I propose a 50 year plan to pay off the debt.

I recommend that we simultaneously dismantle the IRS, end all federal income taxes and have the federal government funded by the States and Territories.  Completely remove the ability of the federal government to levy taxes altogether.  Draft a transition plan to eliminate or transition to the State level or private sector Federal Departments (Homeland Security, Department of Education, Health and Human Services, Energy, NASA and others).  The only departments that the federal government retains is the three branches of government, the State and Defense Departments.

Social Security, a great idea, was ruined by politicians.

We must ensure that those vested in the Social Security program receive benefits.  However, we should immediately transition those who are under the age of say 30 to a private sector plan that they control.  The federal government has proven that it cannot keep it's hands out of the funds.  Social Security was supposed to be an individual savings account.  However, the Federal Government raided it and now future generations have to pay for the previous one.  What a Ponzi scheme!

Medicare/Medicaid are programs that are too large for the federal government to run efficiently.

We cannot eliminate these programs over night.  However, we need a multi dimensional thrust to improve efficiency, reduce corruption and ensure that there is a transition plan to take these programs out of the hands of the federal government so that they can be managed regionally by the States under a consortium of Medical Professionals!  No more bureaucrats!

The Department of Education is, in my opinion, a failure.  Our nation's youth continues to perform poorly vs countries around the globe.  If we are to remain a shining beacon of freedom then we must turn this issue around!  The answers obviously do not lie in our federal Department of Education.

Transition the Department of Education out of federal hands and place it under a consortium of Educational Professionals  and Parents managed by the States regionally.

Defense Department.  The budget is too large.  Our military needs to be retooled for national defense vice it being used as a global military arm to spread freedom and democracy.  When I was on active duty during the Cold War, a military budget in the $400B range was satisfactory.

     Close down foreign bases!

Conduct a complete review of the military with a focus on "defense".

Analyze Military Organizational Structure and limit the numbers of Admirals, Generals and Senior Executive Service (SES) in each branch of the military.

Consolidate bases in regions where this is achievable.

Conduct a complete review of Defense Acquisition.  Consolidate Acquisition for all services within one organization.  Ensure that the majority of funds (90% or greater) is spent on Acquisition and that it is not taxed and spent on perks or services at various levels in the DOD.

Conduct a review to determine how much blue water Navy we need to maintain  operational proficiency and freedom of the seas.  How many battle groups?  How many Carriers?  Can any of these be transferred to Reserve Status?

Veterans.  We must take care of our military veterans regardless of whether they serve a  4 year term or a full 20-30+ year career.  They deserve our gratitude and the entitlements that they have earned.

Our Veterans receive Tricare, a health care system that is paid for by the thankful citizens of this great nation.  Conduct a review to see just how much more retirees can afford to pay in premiums in order that they too participate in reducing the nation's debt.

The Department of Energy is, well another example of tax payer dollars being wasted.  We continue to be dependent on foreign oil and energy costs continue to rise.

Energy policy and regulation should transition to the States.  States should promote the technological advancement of all clean energy, nuclear power, as well as expanded research for new sources of oil and natural gas.

American Culture.

I am a product of the Hippie Revolution!  Free Love!  However, what is to become of our children and grandchildren?  It's natural for new generations to challenge the previous one.  What our country is in desperate need of is civility, respect, honor, integrity and courage.  The terms "gentleman" and "lady" seem to be out of date.  This is a shame!  I could create a blog on this issue alone, but I placed a notation on it here because I believe that unless we solve these issues we cannot solve the others!

Political Parties (including the Tea Parties).

Our Founding Fathers gave us a Republic with the intent that government would be of the people and for the people.  Therefore, why do we allow Political Parties and the special interests behind them to subsume our House of Representatives from our control?  Tim Cox has the answer.  The answer is GOOOH! (spoken GO!), which stands for "Get Out of Our House!".

Lastly, I realize that many of the points and recommendations that I have made will likely raise emotions regardless of what your political perspective is.  Liberal progressives, socialists, communists, union supporters, and a host of other groups can and will take issue with these points and recommendations.  For me, this proves that we live in an unstable universe.  Whether you believe in God, as I do, or not ....the truth is that this universe is not balanced, it is not fair, and the words "all things created equal" simply have no bearing here.  Attempting to level the playing field, forcing the universe to be fair or blindly believing that we are all born "equal" is to bury one's head in the sand.  That is not to say, however, that we shouldn't try to achieve these things.  In fact, I believe that God placed us in this universe as a challenge for us to conquer it as well as our own biases and inadequacies.  We were created to tame this planet, and to eventually travel within our solar system and beyond.  God created a universe so great and vast!  Why shouldn't we stake our claim to it!  It is my hope that someday we will all realize that we are human beings, that we will conquer pain and suffering and raise the human condition for everyone.  In the meantime, let's not destroy ourselves by trying to do it all over night!  We can leave some work to future generations.  Let's get done what we can during our short lives and leave the world a better place for our children!
